Mandatory Commercial Organics Recycling
In October of 2014 Governor Brown signed AB 1826 requiring businesses to recycle their organic waste on or after April 1, 2016.  Organics wastes means food waste, green waste, landscape and pruning waste, nonhazardous wood waste and food-soiled paper waste that is mixed in with food waste.

AB 1826 also requires that multi-family complexes (that consist of five or more units) recycle their organics (with the exception of food waste).

This law phases in the mandatory recycling of commercial organics waste over time.  The timeline below shows implementation requirements:

  •  2016 - All businesses and multi-family complexes with 8 or more cubic yards of organic waste per week.
  •  2017 - All businesses and multi-family complexes with 4 or more cubic yards of organic waste per week.
  •  2019- All businesses and multi-family complexes with 4 or more cubic yards of solid waste per week.

Returning organic materials to the soil drastically reduces the environmental impacts of landfills, reduces greenhouse gases, creates jobs and helps sustain California's agricultural industry.
